In Satie / The Rite Of Spring is a double-bill production blending music and dance theater. First initiated in 2021, this world premiere at the Shanghai International Dance Center features the collaboration between Chinese classical musicians and Xie Xin Dance Theatre dancers.

In Satie-The Lightness

This segment features re-arranged versions of Satie’s Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes for piano and vibraphone by Fu Yifei. Choreographer Xie Xin seamlessly integrates musicians as part of the dance ensemble.

The Rite of the Spring-The Rising Road

Based on the original two-piano arrangement, Fu Yifei has re-imagined the orchestral percussion for a version featuring two pianists and two percussionists. Since its 1913 debut, Stravinsky’s monumental score has inspired countless dance productions. Now, Xie Xin—already internationally recognized takes on the challenge of creating a fresh and stunning interpretation of La Sacre du Printemps, performed with this unique instrumental ensemble.

This production promises to be truly one-of-a-kind, showcasing innovative artistry in both music and dance.

The 30th Anniversary of Bourne’s Genre-defining Work

© Johan Persson

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns for its 30th anniversary with a 2024/25 UK tour. This audacious reinvention of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece caused a sensation when it premiered almost 30 years ago and has since become the most successful dance theatre production of all time. In celebration of that ongoing impact, Swan Lake will take flight once more in this major revival for the next generation, visiting 19 venues over 29 weeks.

Thrilling, bold, witty and emotive, this genre-defining event is still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered convention, turning tradition on its head.

First staged at Sadler’s Wells in London in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake took the dance theatre world by storm becoming the longest running full-length dance classic in the West End and on Broadway. It has since been performed across the globe, collecting over thirty international accolades including the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and three Tony Awards for Best Director of a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

Matthew Bourne said, “As our swans take flight once more in this major revival, I’m full of anticipation for the challenges it will bring for our next generation of dancers and the wonder that it will bring to audiences who will experience it for the very first time.”

A New Encounter with Kontakthof

Originally premiered in 1978, Kontakthof is a seminal piece in Pina Bausch’s repertoire, created at a time when her work was beginning to receive international recognition.

It is said that Pina often mused on the idea of seeing her original cast dance the piece when older. Now, 45 years later, a new encounter with Kontakthof is being created by choreographer Meryl Tankard, who was one of the main characters in 1978.

Eight of the original dancers return to their roles as the production creates a poignant interaction between past and present. Kontakthof – Echoes of ‘78 integrates projections of archival footage from their performances as younger dancers, and with company members no longer on stage.

Farooq Chaudhry – Ten Thousand Tons of Moonlight

November 15th – 17th, 2024 Young Theatre, Shanghai
Duration: unknown

When Poetry Meets Dance

© Oliver Hoo

Ten Thousand Tons of Moonlight is a compelling dance-theatre production that draws inspiration from the thought-provoking poems of Yu Xiuhua, a female celebrated contemporary Chinese poet. The production brings to life Yu Xiuhua’s reflections and questions on love, beauty, disability, and the societal expectations placed on women.

Conceived and directed by Farooq Chaudhry, Ten Thousand Tons of Moonlight, merges the languages of poetry, dance and visual design to explore the dualities and contradictions that inhabit Yu Xiuhua and all of us. The performance raises questions about the role of personal struggles in finding our authenticity. It asks whether stepping out of the shadows and embracing our true selves is the key to finding liberation, or if these shadows hold a deeper meaning? Could these poems, serve as a doorway to an alternate reality where our essence can flourish and our souls can find freedom?
