Aiub. Ioug. Ayub. Ainou. Aiou. I had the same difficulty pronouncing her Arabic name as I had understanding that our love wasn’t possible in an impossible world.

This name came to destroy, in some way, my West.

Initially, this project was intended to save a man in a vulnerable situation, and for that man to save me from loneliness. I traveled to Tangier (Morocco) to find him, marry him, give him my Europeanized South American papers, and then create a new work based on that.

But Ayoub appeared, and the project collapsed. His name (“the returnee” or “the repentant”) is very popular in Islamic countries: 615 children of that name were murdered by the Zionist state of Israel in the Gaza Strip.

For those dead, I name this work after you, about colonialism, about Palestine.

And everything I want to kill inside me.

Five figures are trapped in a temporal maze, mutating and colliding in an attempt to defy immortality. Their existence takes place in a vast sulfuric landscape, unfolding in a series of chronicles. Is this landscape the ground for new creations, or made out of remnants of what once existed?

Confronted with different laws and physical phenomena, their bodies reveal other behaviors and possibilities of being, without knowing if they are at the twilight or dawn of their existence. We are witnessing a bodily metamorphosis in an abyssal and poetic dimension.

Chroniques unveils the next chapter in Peeping Tom’s universe.

Christos Papadopoulos’ Most Personal Work

With My Fierce Ignorant Step (Working Title), Papadopoulos seeks to consciously process the influence that “Axion Esti”—the monumental work by Mikis Theodorakis founded on the poetry of Odysseas Elytis—exerted on him, exploring the extent to which sound and speech can dilate and reach a state of abstraction that alludes to that of a movement: a lifted arm, an oscillating body, a trembling leg.

For the choreographer, the first impulse for the creation of “My Fierce Ignorant Step (Working Title)” is grounded in aural memories of his childhood and younger age, memories that he shares with many other Greeks: collective memories that are connected with the fate of this country, even if this is not immediately apparent. Is it possible to work on a text with the same composition principles applied to the choreography of a body? How close to words can a body come, and vice versa? Can this turn into a shared, transparent, and simple experience?

A New Encounter with Kontakthof

Originally premiered in 1978, Kontakthof is a seminal piece in Pina Bausch’s repertoire, created at a time when her work was beginning to receive international recognition.  

It is said that Pina often mused on the idea of seeing her original cast dance the piece when older. Now, 45 years later, a new encounter with Kontakthof is being created by choreographer Meryl Tankard, who was one of the main characters in 1978. 

Eight of the original dancers return to their roles as the production creates a poignant interaction between past and present. Kontakthof – Echoes of ‘78 integrates projections of archival footage from their performances as younger dancers, and with company members no longer on stage.
